Vasco grew around the Mormugao Port — one of India's major ports, developed in the late 19th century and still a busy shipping route in Asia. The city also hosts Goa Shipyard Limited, which builds vessels for the Indian Navy and Coast Guard, and the Indian Navy maintains a significant presence here with INS Hansa. The result is a city with two distinct characters. Around the port, the shipyard, and the naval areas, traffic is heavy with industrial and defence vehicles, and roads carry a different rhythm than in residential Goa. The residential belts — Vaddem, Bogda, Mangor Hill, New Vaddem, and the Sada plateau — are quieter but still see port-related traffic on the connecting roads. Vasco's roads also have a geometric layout with multistorey buildings, a legacy of the Portuguese-era planning that built the city along with the port. Two: Vasco sits at the mouth of the Zuari river, and both the railway terminus and the airport are within a few kilometres. Vasco da Gama railway station is a terminus — not a through station — which makes it the origin and end point for trains rather than a stop on a longer route.
