Shimla is the only city we serve where every move is a descent

Every long-distance route from Shimla begins with a downhill. The city sits at roughly 2,200 metres, and the nearest plains — at Solan (1,550m), Kalka (200m), and Chandigarh (350m) — are all below. Shimla has no airport of its own for practical purposes (Jubbarhatti handles very limited flights), so every long-haul pet move from here starts with a road descent, whether the destination is Chandigarh, Delhi, or anywhere else. The descent itself is the constraint. The NH-5 (Hindustan–Tibet Road) toward Solan and Kalka, and the Shimla–Chandigarh road via Shoghi and Parwanoo, both run through tight hairpin sections where the vehicle is constantly braking rather than accelerating. Pets that are already stressed feel this more than steady highway driving, so we build in extra breaks and use the same handler throughout — no mid-route handoffs to fresh drivers who don't know your pet.

Winter snow closes the hill roads outright. From late December to February, Shimla gets regular snowfall — sometimes heavy. The Kufri–Narkanda stretch, the Naldehra road, and the upper reaches beyond Mashobra can be blocked for days after a storm. Even NH-5 can be slowed by black ice and falling rock. We check Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority advisories and Public Works Department road-status updates every morning through the winter months. If a road-closure warning is active on your pickup date, we reschedule at no cost — we do not attempt a hill descent with a pet on board when snow is still on the road. Chain-equipped vehicles and local driver knowledge are essential, and we use both.

Monsoon brings landslides; tourist season brings gridlock. From July to September, heavy rain on the Shivalik and mid-Himalayan slopes triggers landslides on the Shimla–Chandigarh road, the Shimla–Kalka road, and the NH-5 toward Kinnaur. We monitor daily and reroute where possible. Separately, Shimla's peak tourist season — April to June, and again late December — fills the town's narrow approach roads with visitors, and the one-way system on Cart Road and the Ridge slows every vehicle to walking pace during those weeks. We plan pickups for early morning or between 2 PM and 4 PM to work around the tourist traffic, and we ask for a slightly wider pickup window during the peak season because exact timing is harder to guarantee.
