Two things that shape every Mysore pet move

One: Mysore Dasara is Karnataka's state festival, and for ten days every autumn the entire city is reorganised around it. Dasara — also called Nadahabba, the state festival of Karnataka — runs through the ten days of Navaratri, and it is the single largest event in the city's calendar. The Mysore Palace is illuminated with close to 100,000 light bulbs every evening for the full ten days, the Dasara Exhibition runs at Doddakere Maidan, and cultural programmes — Yuva Dasara, classical music and dance concerts, and food festivals — take over multiple venues across the city. On the final day, Vijayadashami, the Jamboo Savari is held: a grand procession of caparisoned elephants, camels, horses, and tableaux that leaves from the Mysore Palace and winds through the city to the Bannimantap Torana, about six kilometres away. The lead elephant carries a golden howdah weighing around 750 kilograms, and the procession is followed in the evening by a torchlight parade at the Bannimantap Grounds. For pet moves, this has a very specific effect. The procession route through the city centre is closed or heavily restricted for the day, the roads leading to the Palace, the Zoo, and Bannimantap are cordoned off, and for ten days the palace-adjacent areas carry continuous crowds and traffic. We do not schedule pickups from the procession route or the Palace area during Dasara, and for wider-city pickups during the ten days we plan for very early morning slots. Two: Mysore is a craft city, and two of its oldest institutions are genuinely unique in India. The first is Mysore Silk. The Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation was established in 1912 under the patronage of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, and the Mysore Silk saree — with its distinctive gold zari border — received a Geographical Indication tag in 2005–06. The KSIC silk factory in Mysore is one of the few in India where silk is reeled, twisted, dyed, woven, and finished under a single roof, and the sarees are sold from dedicated KSIC showrooms. The second is Mysore Paints and Varnish Limited. Established in 1937 by Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar as a small unit to manufacture lac and varnish for the state, it went on to become India's only manufacturer of the indelible ink used in Indian elections — the violet mark applied to a voter's finger at every polling booth in the country. The same ink is now exported to more than 30 countries for their own elections, and MPVL has been the sole supplier to the Election Commission of India for decades. Both institutions sit in the city's older industrial belt, and the roads around the KSIC factory and the MPVL unit carry their own weekday traffic patterns. For pet moves, this shows up as a modest but real constraint: pickups near these units are planned outside the shift-change hours, and the KSIC showroom area on Sayyaji Rao Road — which sits close to the Devaraja Market — is best avoided on market-heavy days. Waterproof crate liners and covered loading apply through the monsoon from June to September, and pickups are rescheduled at no cost on red-alert days.
