Why Srinagar is the most weather-sensitive city on our map

One: Chillai Kalan is not a normal winter. From 21 December to 30 January every year, Kashmir experiences what locals call Chillai Kalan — "the great cold" — a 40-day period when Srinagar's nighttime temperatures drop to -5°C to -8°C, the Dal Lake partially freezes, and mornings often start below zero. Two shorter cold spells follow it — Chillai Khurd (roughly 30 January to 19 February) and Chillai Bacha (19 February to 1 March) — but they are milder. During Chillai Kalan, we run every vehicle with the cabin heated to a steady 20–22°C, and we add heating pads to the crate base for small pets and senior dogs. We do not schedule pickups before 8 AM during this window, because the coldest hours are between 4 and 7 AM and starting a pet's journey in those hours adds real stress.

Two: the road can close for days. Srinagar's only road connection to the rest of India is NH-44, which crosses the Pir Panjal through the Banihal tunnel and passes through some of the most slide-prone terrain in the country. During winter storms — and often during heavy monsoon rain from July to September — the highway can close for hours or occasionally for two to three days at a time. When it closes, there is no alternate road. Air is the only option. We monitor National Highways Authority and J&K traffic advisories every morning before confirming any road-based long-haul slot. If NH-44 is closed on your pickup date, we either reroute the trip via air, or reschedule at no cost — whichever works better for your situation.

Three: air is the reliable long-haul link. Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport at Budgam handles regular flights to Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Jammu, and other Indian cities, and it is the primary way pets move in and out of the Valley for long distances. We handle door-to-airport transport, IATA-compliant crate fitting, and cargo terminal handover at Budgam. Winter flights are affected by two things — snow on the runway at Srinagar, and fog in Delhi — so we check both Srinagar and destination weather before confirming any air-shipping slot. When a flight is delayed or cancelled, we notify you immediately and hold the pet in a heated kennel until the next available departure.

And one more: tourist season shapes pickup timing. From April to October, Srinagar fills with visitors — mainly around Dal Lake, the Mughal gardens at Nishat and Shalimar, and the Boulevard Road (Foreshore Road). That traffic concentrates on a handful of lakeside roads and the Dal Gate approach. For pickups from Rajbagh, Dal Gate, or the Boulevard, we plan early-morning slots during peak season to avoid the tourist traffic. For pickups from Bemina, Hyderpora, Chanapora, or Soura — away from the lake — timing is more flexible.
