The district is associated with the Bhakti poet-saint Ravidas, and with several other saints and Sufi figures whose shrines are spread across the district, including the mausoleum of the Sufi saint Makhdoom Shah Wilayat at Safipur, which draws visitors through the year. Unnao was one of the districts that rose in the Revolt of 1857 — the talukdar Raja Rao Ram Baksh Singh of Baiswara was a leading figure, and the excavations at his fort in 2013 for buried gold became a national story. The district is also home to the Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary, one of the more important wetlands in Uttar Pradesh and a seasonal stop for migratory birds, which brings visitors into the Unnao–Kanpur road belt through the winter. And the Ganga marks the northern edge of the district, with the ghats and crossings at places like Ganj Muradabad and Bighapur shaping the movement of people and goods.
