Two things that shape every Thrissur pet move

One: Thrissur Pooram is the largest temple festival in Kerala, and for the days around it the entire city reorganises itself. The Thrissur Pooram is often described as the "mother of all Poorams," and it is held every year in the Malayalam month of Medam — usually late April or early May — at the Vadakkunnathan Temple, right at the centre of the city. The festival brings together two competing temple groups, Paramekkavu and Thiruvambady, each of which assembles fifteen caparisoned elephants, so thirty elephants stand facing each other on the Thekkinkadu Maidan on the main Pooram day. The Kudamattam — the rapid exchange of coloured parasols between the two groups — is the visual centrepiece, and the Ilanjithara Melam, the percussion ensemble of drummers and horn players performing under a single banyan tree, is the sonic one. The festival closes with a fireworks display at the maidan that runs through the night. What makes the Pooram genuinely distinctive is that the temple sits inside a sixty-five-acre open ground at the very centre of the city, with a road circling it — Round South, Round East, Round North, Round West. For the days around the Pooram, that entire ring road is closed or heavily restricted, the approach roads to the maidan are cordoned off, and the city's traffic pattern is redrawn around the event. We do not schedule pickups from the maidan belt or the Round roads during the Pooram week, and for wider-city pickups we plan very early morning slots. Separately, a Pooram Exhibition runs at the maidan for about a month before the festival, and that window also changes pickup timings near the centre of the town.

Two: Thrissur is the gold capital of India and a landlocked city with no airport of its own, and both facts change how long-distance pet moves are planned. Thrissur is the largest gold jewellery manufacturing centre in the country, and a substantial share of the gold jewellery sold across India is made in the workshops of Thrissur and its surrounding belt. The industry is built on thousands of small manufacturing units — many of them family-run and concentrated in and around the city — and the largest jewellery retail chains in Kerala are headquartered here. The gold moves in through the Kochi airport and the Kochi port before reaching Thrissur's workshops, and the finished jewellery then travels back out through the same channels to retail showrooms across South India. The scale of the industry gives Thrissur a commercial energy that is genuinely different from the temple-town image it often carries, and the roads around the gold-manufacturing belt carry steady commercial traffic on weekdays. On top of that, Thrissur has no airport. The nearest options are Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery, about fifty kilometres south, and Coimbatore International Airport, about a hundred and thirty kilometres east. Both are workable, but neither is close, so every long-distance air move from Thrissur includes a road leg that we plan into the schedule. Thrissur railway station, meanwhile, is a major junction on the Shoranur–Kochi line, with direct trains toward Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and most major cities, so assisted rail shipping is genuinely practical here. The district also has more captive elephants than any other place in the world — the Punnathurkotta elephant camp near Guruvayur, now called Anakkotta, holds the largest number of captive elephants anywhere — and elephants are part of the district's civic life in a way that has no parallel elsewhere in India. Waterproof crate liners and covered loading apply through the monsoon from June to September, and pickups are rescheduled at no cost on red-alert days.
