What makes a Shillong pet move different from every other city

One: there is no railway station in Shillong. The nearest railway head is Guwahati, about 100 km away on NH-6. Unlike every other state capital we serve, Shillong cannot fall back on rail for long-distance moves. Every pet that leaves the city goes out either by road on NH-6 or by air from Umroi. Umroi Airport is roughly 30 km from the city, and the flight network is limited — mostly ATR services to Kolkata, with occasional connections to Guwahati. For long-distance destinations like Delhi, Mumbai, or Bangalore, the realistic route is still Guwahati airport by road, then air from there. We handle both the road leg and the air handover.

Two: NH-6 is the only road out, and it runs past Umiam Lake. The road descends from Shillong at 1,500 metres to Guwahati at 55 metres, and much of that descent passes along the shoreline of Umiam Lake — the reservoir created by the Umiam dam. The lakeside stretch has continuous curves, and after heavy rain the road can be slick for long sections. Beyond the lake, the road passes through Nongpoh, Jorabat, and into Guwahati. Total driving time from Shillong to Guwahati is normally 2.5–3 hours but can stretch to 4–5 hours in bad weather or during peak tourist weekends. We plan departures for early morning, when the road is emptiest and the surface is coolest, and we build in extra breaks for the descent — because sustained braking on hill curves stresses pets more than steady highway driving.

Three: this is one of the wettest regions on earth. Mawsynram and Cherrapunji — both within 60 km of Shillong — are the two wettest places on the planet, with annual rainfall of over 11,000 mm. Shillong itself receives around 2,500 mm, most of it between May and September. During these months, NH-6 is prone to landslides, especially on the Umiam Lake stretch, and the road can close for hours when debris blocks a section. We monitor Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority and NH-6 traffic advisories every morning through the monsoon. On days when a landslide warning is active, road departures are held and rescheduled at no cost. For pet parents who need to travel during a monsoon window, Umroi air shipping is an option — but flights are also affected by low cloud and heavy rain, so we plan around both.

And one more: tourist season changes traffic. From April to June, and again from October to November, Shillong fills with visitors — mainly for Umiam Lake, Elephant Falls, and onward trips to Cherrapunji and Mawlynnong. The Police Bazar area, the Shillong Bypass, and the NH-6 exit stretch all slow considerably. For pickups from Laitumkhrah, Police Bazar, or Oakland, we plan early-morning slots during the peak season. For pickups from Mawlai, Rynjah, or Nongmensong — away from the tourist core — timing is more flexible.
