One: Sasaram is built around a 16th-century tomb in the middle of a lake, and the town's layout still follows that historic core. The most recognisable landmark in Sasaram is the mausoleum of Sher Shah Suri — the Afghan emperor who ruled Delhi in the 1540s and built the Grand Trunk Road — standing on a square island in a large artificial lake in the centre of the town. The old town grew up around that lake and the tomb, with narrow lanes, older markets, and a dense mix of homes and shops. A second, more modern belt runs along the Grand Trunk Road and the railway line, where the junction, the bus stands, and the newer commercial areas sit. These two parts of Sasaram have very different street conditions. The lanes around the lake and the tomb are tight, often crowded, and can be difficult for a large vehicle to enter. The GT Road corridor is wide but carries constant heavy traffic — trucks, buses, and the general flow of one of India's oldest and busiest highways. Two: Sasaram is a stone town at the gateway to the Kaimur hills, and the region's quarrying and highway traffic shape the travel calendar. The Rohtas district around Sasaram is one of Bihar's main stone-producing areas, and the hills and plateaus nearby — the Kaimur range and the Rohtas plateau — have been quarried for generations. Stone-laden trucks are a constant presence on the highways and approach roads, and they slow traffic, kick up dust, and make some stretches genuinely rough. Beyond the stone industry, the district is agricultural — paddy, wheat and pulses dominate the fields — and the Sone river, which flows a short distance west of Sasaram near Dehri-on-Sone, is the major watercourse of the region. The monsoon, from June to September, is the other big factor: the Sone and local streams run high, low-lying stretches and culverts can go under water, and the district administration sometimes issues flood alerts for the riverside blocks.
