One: Rishikesh is built around two pedestrian suspension bridges, and that single fact decides how a pet can be picked up. The Laxman Jhula and the Ram Jhula are the two landmarks the town is organised around — and neither of them allows vehicles. Everything on the far bank and in the lanes leading to the bridges moves on foot, by two-wheeler or by small hand-cart. Tapovan, Laxman Jhula, Swarg Ashram, and the ghat-side neighbourhoods around Triveni Ghat and Parmarth Niketan all sit inside this pedestrian belt, with narrow lanes, steep approaches, and constant foot traffic from pilgrims, tourists and ashram residents. The newer parts of town — Muni Ki Reti, Bhogpur, Shyampur, Virbhadra, IDPL, and the stretches along the Dehradun and Haridwar roads — are on flatter ground and far easier for a vehicle to reach. And pickups on the Neelkanth road or in the Shivpuri, Brahmpuri, Byasi, Kaudiyala and Chilla belts need longer approach times, a confirmed landmark rather than a house number, and a route check, because the hill road can be affected by landslides through the monsoon. Two: Rishikesh sits where the Ganga leaves the Himalayas, and its calendar is set by the Char Dham yatra, the Kanwar Yatra, the rafting season and the monsoon. The town is the gateway to the Char Dham — Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri — and the Rishikesh–Badrinath highway carries the yatra traffic every year from around late April or May until the shrines close in November. The Kanwar Yatra, in the Shravan month, brings an enormous flow of pilgrims carrying Ganga water, and the routes through Haridwar and Rishikesh become extremely busy. The rafting season runs roughly from September to June, and it makes the highway stretches at Brahmpuri, Shivpuri, Byasi and Kaudiyala some of the busiest rafting roads in the country on weekends and holidays. Rishikesh is also the yoga capital of the world — the International Yoga Festival in March and the year-round flow of yoga students, ashram residents and long-stay visitors give the town an unusually international character, and it is a fully vegetarian, alcohol-free holy city by municipal rule. On top of all this, Rishikesh sits at the edge of the Rajaji Tiger Reserve, with the Chilla range and its wildlife corridor just downstream, and the Ganga itself is protected and revered along its entire course here.
