Three bridges · One river · The delta head

What makes a Rajahmundry pet move genuinely different from anywhere else on our map

One: three separate bridges cross the Godavari here, and each has different traffic. The Godavari at Rajahmundry is one of the widest river crossings in South India, and there are three distinct bridges connecting the two banks. The Havelock Bridge — built by the British in 1900 and now retired from traffic — sits as a heritage structure between the newer spans. The Godavari Rail-cum-Road Bridge, opened in 1997, carries both a rail line and a road deck. And the Godavari Road Bridge carries the main NH-16 road traffic. For any pet move that has to cross from the Rajahmundry side to the Kovvur side — toward Eluru, Vijayawada, or the rest of coastal Andhra — the road bridge is the standard crossing. It narrows to two lanes at the approach and slows considerably during the morning and evening peaks. We time the crossing for early morning or between 2 PM and 4 PM, and we hold departures during festival processions that occasionally close the bridge for a few hours. Because the river is so wide here, there is no alternate shallow crossing to fall back on — the three bridges are the only way over.

Two: the Dowleswaram Barrage, just downstream, controls the entire Godavari delta. About 8 km south of the city, the Dowleswaram Barrage — designed by the British engineer Sir Arthur Cotton in the mid-19th century — splits the Godavari into its distributaries and feeds the canal system that turned the Godavari delta into the rice bowl of Andhra Pradesh. The barrage is the reason Rajahmundry exists in its current form. For pet moves, the barrage matters in two ways. First, upstream water releases during the monsoon — from the Sriram Sagar Project and the Godavari basin — can raise the river sharply, and low-lying areas on both banks occasionally flood. We check Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority and Godavari basin advisories every morning through the monsoon. Second, the barrage itself and the Cotton Museum nearby draw steady visitors, and the approach roads around Dowleswaram village can slow on weekends. We plan pickups in Dowleswaram and the immediate barrage area around visitor traffic, not against it.

Three: Pushkaralu rewrites the city every 12 years — and the next one is in 2027. The Godavari Pushkaralu — the river's own version of the Kumbh Mela — takes place once every 12 years, when the planet Jupiter enters the zodiac sign of Leo. The last one was in July 2015, when lakhs of pilgrims descended on Rajahmundry to bathe at Pushkar Ghat and other ghats along the river. The next is expected in 2027. During the Pushkaralu month, the ghats are packed, the roads around Pushkar Ghat and the bridge approaches are restricted, and the city operates under festival traffic control. If your travel dates fall anywhere near the 2027 Pushkaralu window, we will tell you exactly which weeks to avoid. Outside those weeks, the city is quieter and pickup timing is far more flexible. This is the single largest seasonal factor that shapes long-term planning for any Rajahmundry pet move, and it is unique to cities on the Godavari.

And one more: Rajahmundry is an industrial base, and that shows up in how the city works. The city is home to major paper mills — including the historic Andhra Paper facility at Dowleswaram — and the ONGC base for the Godavari basin oil and gas fields. That means the roads around the industrial zones carry regular heavy-vehicle movement on weekday mornings and late afternoons, especially along the Rajahmundry–Kakinada road and around Kadiam. For residential pickups in Danavaipeta, T Nagar, Gandhipuram, or Aryanagar — well away from the industrial belt — this has little effect. But for pickups near Dowleswaram, Kadiam, or Morampudi, we usually recommend an early morning slot to avoid the factory and port traffic. The monsoon adds its own layer: waterproof crate liners and covered loading apply from June to September, and pickups are rescheduled at no cost on red-alert days.
