From there, Munsiyari — the "Mini Kashmir" of Kumaon, with the Panchachuli peaks on its horizon and the gateway to the Johar valley and the Milam and Ralam glaciers — is a full day's drive to the north-east. Dharchula, on the Kali river at the Nepal border and the traditional starting point of the Kailash Mansarovar route via the Lipulekh pass, is another long, winding drive. Gangolihat, with its ancient Haat Kalika temple, Berinag and Chaukori, with their tea gardens and wide Himalayan views, Didihat, Thal, Kanalichhina and Munakot are each in their own valley or on their own ridge, connected by single roads that climb and descend for hours. The result is a district where a pickup in Pithoragarh town is a very different job from a pickup in Munsiyari, Dharchula or the Johar and Darma valleys. Two: Pithoragarh is a border district — Nepal on one side, Tibet on the other — and its calendar, its roads and its people are all shaped by that. The Kali river marks the eastern border with Nepal, and the high passes to the north lead into Tibet's Ngari region. Because of this, much of the district falls under the Inner Line Permit system — Indian nationals need permits to travel into the border belts around Dharchula, Munsiyari and the Darma and Johar valleys, and foreign nationals need them for the wider border zone. The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, one of the most important pilgrimages in the Hindu tradition, traditionally passed through this district via the Lipulekh pass from Dharchula, and though the route has changed in recent years, the town remains a base for border trade and for the pilgrims and traders who move through it. The district is also home to the Bhotiya Shauka communities — the traditional trans-Himalayan traders of the Johar and Darma valleys, whose culture, dress, festivals and language are distinct from the Kumaoni mainstream — alongside Kumaoni communities across the lower ridges. Jauljibi and Jhulaghat are historic trade points with Nepal, and the Jauljibi fair, at the confluence of the Gori and Kali rivers, is one of the oldest trading fairs in the region. The district also has the Askot Wildlife Sanctuary, a protected area known for its musk deer and Himalayan biodiversity, and the Narayan Ashram near Pithoragarh, a well-known spiritual centre.
