In Panaji, every route begins with a bridge

One: the Mandovi is crossed at only three points. Panaji sits on the south bank of the Mandovi river, and the only ways to North Goa — Porvorim, Mapusa, and onward to Maharashtra — are the three Mandovi bridges: the old Mandovi bridge, the new Mandovi bridge, and the newer Atal Setu. All three carry heavy traffic and all three slow to a crawl during the morning and evening peaks. Every long-haul pet move from Panaji crosses one of them. We time those crossings for early morning or between 2 PM and 4 PM, and we hold departures when the bridges are backed up after an accident or during festival processions.

Two: Fontainhas and the colonial core have genuinely narrow lanes. The Latin Quarter — Fontainhas and Sao Tome — is one of the few surviving Portuguese colonial neighbourhoods in Asia, and its streets are narrow, one-way, and often impassable for anything larger than a small car. Parking is essentially nonexistent. For pickups from Fontainhas, Sao Tome, or the older parts of Altinho, we use smaller vehicles or arrange the crate handover from a nearby road junction, walking the pet the short distance on a leash. From Campal, Miramar, Dona Paula, or Taleigao, access is straightforward and pickup timing is more flexible.

Three: peak tourist season changes everything. From mid-December to early January, Goa fills with visitors, and Panaji's roads — especially around Miramar, Dona Paula, and the Mandovi bridge approaches — slow considerably. Between 20 December and 5 January, we advise booking pickup at least a week in advance and scheduling early morning departures. Waterproof crate liners and covered loading apply across both monsoon windows from June to November, and red-alert days are rescheduled at no cost. Also worth noting: Goa's ferry system is essential for reaching some parts of the state, but we do not transport pets on ferries — ferries are crowded, noisy, and slow, and road routes are always preferable for the pet's wellbeing even if longer.
