One: the Friday market reshapes the town's traffic every week, and we plan around it. The Mapusa Friday market is one of Goa's oldest and most iconic institutions — a weekly gathering where farmers from across the state bring produce, and vendors sell everything from Goan spices and sausages to fresh bread, fish, and clothing. Vendors arrive as early as 6:00 AM and stay until sunset, and the market draws crowds from every corner of Goa. The effect on the town is significant: the central market zone and the surrounding roads become severely congested every Friday, and during festive periods — Christmas, Diwali, and the major feast days — the crowds swell further. Parking is scarce, and the internal market lanes become almost impassable on foot. For pet moves, this means we do not schedule pickups from the immediate market area on Fridays. We plan those pickups for other days of the week, or for early morning before the vendors arrive, and for pickups from residential belts like Duler, Cunchelim, and Khorlim — which sit outside the central market zone — Fridays are manageable with the right timing. The Mapusa River — Rio de Mapuça in Portuguese — is a tributary of the Mandovi that originates in the jungles of Dumacem and Amthane, meanders eastward and then southward before draining into the Mandovi at Penha de Franca. The river runs through Mapusa's western edge, and the town sits on low-lying terrain that makes it genuinely flood-prone. During the monsoon from June to September, heavy showers trigger widespread waterlogging across the Mapusa municipal market and surrounding areas — water accumulates rapidly in the internal market lanes, submerging parked two-wheelers and encircling shops. The problem is compounded by tidal influences: the Mapusa River is a tidal river, and its drainage is affected by high and low tides, which means waterlogging can persist even after the rain stops. The state government has launched a river rejuvenation project involving desilting, widening, and strengthening the riverbed to improve monsoon runoff, and the municipality has set up a monsoon task force — but for pet moves, the practical reality is that we check monsoon conditions and local road reports before confirming any pickup from June to September. On red-alert days, we hold pickups and reschedule at no cost. Waterproof crate liners and covered loading apply throughout the season.
