Two things that shape every Mangaluru pet move

One: Mangaluru has two major railway stations serving two different rail networks, and the country's only tabletop runway at Bajpe. Mangalore Central (MAQ) is the terminus of the Southern Railway's Shoranur–Mangalore line, and it handles trains that run down the Kerala coast toward Kozhikode, Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, and beyond. Mangalore Junction (MAJN), at Kankanady, sits at the intersection of the Southern Railway and the Konkan Railway, and it is the station through which the Mumbai-bound trains pass. This split is genuinely unusual — most Indian cities have one primary station — and it means a pet travelling by rail has to be sent to the right one depending on the direction. For destinations toward Kerala and Tamil Nadu, Central is usually the right station. For destinations toward Goa, Mumbai, and the Konkan coast, Junction is. We confirm the correct station at booking and handle the door-to-station leg accordingly. Separately, Mangaluru International Airport at Bajpe sits on a hilltop plateau about 20 kilometres from the city, and its runway is the only tabletop runway in India — the strip is level on top of a hill, with steep drop-offs at both ends. Only narrow-body aircraft operate here, and landings and takeoffs are genuinely more weather-sensitive than at a typical airport, particularly during the monsoon. We build a wider buffer into Bajpe transfers than we would in a flat-terrain city, and we confirm both the weather on the day and the aircraft type before scheduling any air-shipping departure.

Two: Mangaluru sits at the Netravati–Gurupura confluence, and it is one of the first Indian cities to receive the southwest monsoon every year. The Netravati river flows along the southern edge of the city and meets the Gurupura (also called the Phalguni) at the northern end, so the city is genuinely bracketed by two rivers on its way to the Arabian Sea. The Netravati carries a large share of the district's monsoon runoff, and during the peak of the season it can swell dramatically — the river's flood belt, particularly on the Ullal and Thokkottu side, can be affected when upstream catchments release heavily. The Gurupura is smaller but drains the Bajpe and Kavoor side, and it also backs up during heavy spells. On top of that, Mangaluru is one of the first cities in India to receive the southwest monsoon — the rains typically arrive in the last week of May or the first week of June, and by the middle of June the city is firmly into the wet season. Annual rainfall here runs between 3,000 and 3,800 mm, most of it concentrated in June, July, and August. That makes this one of the heaviest monsoon cities in the country, and it changes how we plan pet moves. We check IMD warnings and Netravati water levels before confirming any pickup from June to September, we avoid the flood-prone belts around Ullal, Thokkottu, and the river crossings during red-alert periods, and we use waterproof crate liners and covered loading throughout the season.
