Two things that shape every Mandi pet move

One: Mandi is called Chhoti Kashi, and the temple belt that gives it that name defines how pickups are planned in the old town. Mandi is said to be named after the sage Mandav, and the town is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in Himachal. Over the centuries, more than eighty stone temples were built along the Beas riverbank and the hillside above, including the Bhootnath temple — which is the focal point of the town — and the Panchvaktra Mahadev, Trilokinath, and Tarna Devi temples. The architecture is distinct from the wooden temples of Kullu and Kinnaur: Mandi's temples are built in the stone shikhara style, and their shikhara spires and stepped ghats give the town its skyline. The Bhootnath temple itself sits directly above the Beas, and the steep steps and ghats that lead down to the river are the heart of the town. Because so many of the temples and ghats sit in narrow, tightly built lanes on the hillside, Mandi's old core is genuinely difficult for large vehicles. The Indira Market area, the Purani Mandi belt, and the lanes around Bhootnath have lanes barely wide enough for a small car, and some stretches are only footpaths. Pickups from these parts of the town use smaller vehicles, or we arrange the crate handover from a nearby main road and walk the pet the short distance on a leash.

Two: the International Shivratri Fair is Mandi's largest event of the year, and it reshapes the town for about a week every February or March. The Mandi Shivratri Fair is one of the biggest state-level fairs in Himachal, and it has been held every year for centuries. The fair begins at the Bhootnath temple, and over the following week the town's main streets are filled with processions, devotional assemblies, cultural performances, and a sprawling market. Hundreds of local deities — the devtas and devis from villages across the Mandi district — are brought into the town for the fair, each accompanied by their own village community, drums, and palanquins. The town's population effectively doubles, the roads around the Bhootnath temple, Indira Market, and the Victoria Bridge are closed or heavily restricted, and hotel and rental demand rises sharply. If your travel dates fall anywhere near the Shivratri window, we strongly recommend booking at least two weeks ahead. We do not schedule pickups from the immediate Bhootnath and Indira Market area during the fair, and for pickups from the wider town we plan for early morning or late evening.
