Two things that shape every Kullu pet move

One: Kullu Dussehra begins when Dussehra ends everywhere else in India, and the week that follows reshapes the entire valley. In the rest of the country, Dussehra marks the end of Navratri and the victory of Rama over Ravana. In Kullu, the festival begins on that same Vijay Dashami day and runs for a further seven days. This is a genuinely unique calendar, and it is tied to a specific historical event. According to local tradition, in the 17th century, Raja Jagat Singh of Kullu was told by a Brahmin that he would be cured of a skin ailment only if he installed a particular idol of Lord Raghunath — an image of Rama — in his capital. The idol was brought from Ayodhya, and when it arrived, the Raja was cured. The day it was installed was Vijay Dashami, and Kullu has observed its Dussehra from that day onward. The festival is held at the Dhalpur Maidan, on the flat ground beside the Beas, and it gathers over 200 local village deities — the devtas and devis — each brought in by their own community with drums, palanquins, and traditional dress. Lord Raghunath is the chief deity, and the week includes processions, the assembly of the deities before him, cultural performances, and the famous Rath Yatra on the final day. For pet moves, the entire Dhalpur area and the roads approaching it are closed or heavily restricted for the week, hotel and rental demand peaks, and pickup times get pushed either to very early morning or to the days before or after the festival. Two: Kullu is the home of the Kullu shawl and the apple belt, and both shape the district's roads and seasons. The Kullu shawl is one of Himachal's most recognisable crafts — it is handwoven on pit looms with distinctive geometric borders and is made from wool, pashmina, or a wool-silk blend. The Kullu shawl received a Geographical Indication tag in 2005–06, protecting the term "Kullu shawl" for products woven in the Kullu district using traditional techniques. The Bhuttico cooperative, founded in the 1940s, is the largest and best-known weavers' cooperative in the valley, and it has played a central role in keeping the craft alive. Many weavers work from home workshops in villages along the valley — Shamshi, Mohal, Raison, and the settlements toward Naggar — and the lanes to their workshops are narrow and often unmarked. Separately, Kullu district is one of India's largest apple-growing regions, and the apple harvest from August to October reshapes the roads each year: orchards on the valley slopes are picked and packed, and the boxed fruit moves along the Chandigarh–Manali highway in trucks through the season. For pet moves, both industries add a layer of local traffic — the weavers' villages in the mid-valley, and the apple-loading points along the highway — and we plan pickups outside the harvest rush hours.
