Two things that shape every Kozhikode pet move

One: Kozhikode was the capital of the Zamorin kingdom and one of the most important ports on the Indian Ocean spice route, and the old city still reflects that history. Vasco da Gama landed at Kappad beach, about 16 km north of the city, on 20 May 1498 — the first European to reach India by sea — and he came specifically for the pepper and cardamom that the Zamorin's port traded across the Indian Ocean and beyond. The Samoothiri (Zamorin) rulers had made Kozhikode a major spice emporium for centuries before that, and the city remained the most important trading port on the Malabar coast through the medieval period. The old city core reflects this layered history. Mananchira Square sits at the centre, built around the historic Mananchira tank, which was the original source of drinking water for the Zamorin's palace and the surrounding town — the tank is still maintained as a public landmark, and the square around it is one of the city's main open spaces. Nearby, Kuttichira is the historic Muslim quarter with the 14th-century Mishkal Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in Kerala, built by a Yemeni merchant named Nakhooda Mishkal. The mosque and the surrounding lanes are a reminder of how the spice trade brought Arab, Chinese, and European traders to Kozhikode long before the Portuguese arrived. For pet moves, this layered old core means narrow heritage lanes around Mananchira, Kuttichira, and the Valiyangadi market belt — pickups there use smaller vehicles or a nearby-road crate handover, while the newer residential belts like Thondayad, Chevayur, and Vellimadukunnu are straightforward.

Two: Kozhikode has no major airport of its own — Karipur at Kondotty is the gateway, and it sits on a hilltop plateau that makes flights genuinely monsoon-sensitive. Karipur International Airport, also called Calicut International Airport, is about 28 km from Kozhikode city at Kondotty, and it is the primary air gateway for the entire Malabar region — Kozhikode, Malappuram, Wayanad, and parts of Palakkad. The airport sits on a hilltop plateau rather than flat ground, and its runway is one of the few tabletop runways in India. That terrain makes operations genuinely more weather-sensitive than at a flat-terrain airport, particularly during the southwest monsoon when crosswinds and low cloud can delay or divert flights. The airport has had a history of monsoon-related disruption, and the runway was lengthened and safety systems upgraded after the 2020 accident. For pet moves, this means air shipping from Karipur requires a wider buffer than we would use in Bengaluru or Chennai, and we check both the weather on the day and the aircraft type before scheduling any air-shipping departure. Separately, the Kallai river that runs through the city was once one of the largest timber trading centres in the world — the timber from the forests of Wayanad and Nilambur came down the river to the Kallai yards, and the timber was then shipped out from the port — and Beypore, at the mouth of the Chaliyar, is still home to the traditional Uru or dhow-building craft, one of the oldest surviving wooden shipbuilding traditions in the world. The craft is still active today, with orders coming in from Gulf countries. Both the Kallai belt and the Beypore boatyards sit on the riverside roads, and we plan pickups there around the local river traffic rather than through it.
