Two things that shape every Kottayam pet move

One: Kottayam is the Land of Letters and the birthplace of the Indian rubber industry, and both legacies are still visible in how the district is laid out. The "Letters" part of the name comes from a specific fact: the first printing press in Kerala was set up at Kottayam in 1821 by Benjamin Bailey, a British missionary associated with the Church Mission Society. The press printed the first Malayalam book in 1824 and the first Malayalam newspaper, the Rajya Samacharam, in 1847. It also produced the first Malayalam translation of the Bible. That single institution seeded the district's long association with literacy and publishing, and Kottayam still has the highest literacy rate in Kerala — a state that already has the highest literacy rate in India. The "Latex" part comes from the district's rubber industry. The first rubber plantations in India were established in Kottayam and the surrounding midland belt in the early 1900s, after seeds of the Hevea brasiliensis tree were smuggled out of Brazil and planted experimentally in Kerala. The industry grew steadily through the 20th century, and the Rubber Board of India — the statutory body that regulates the entire Indian rubber sector — has its headquarters in Kottayam. Today the district is the rubber capital of India, with the largest concentration of natural rubber plantations, rubber-processing units, and rubber-product factories in the country. For pet moves, both legacies show up in the road network. The rubber-estate roads that connect the plantations to the processing units and the collection points are typically narrow, winding, and unlit at night, and they climb into the midland hills away from the main roads. Vembanad is the largest lake in Kerala and the longest lake in India, and it is one of the most important wetland systems in the country — it is a Ramsar site, and it supports one of the largest inland fisheries in the state. Kottayam district sits on the eastern shore of the lake, and the town itself is just a few kilometres from the water at its nearest point. The Kumarakom belt, on the lakeshore about 15 km from Kottayam town, is one of Kerala's most famous backwater destinations, and the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary on the lake is a major seasonal habitat for migratory birds. Between Vembanad and the district's eastern border, the terrain climbs into the high ranges of the Western Ghats, and the belt around Thekkady, Vagamon, and Peerumedu is genuinely hilly — the roads there have hairpin bends and forest sections, and during the monsoon months they can be affected by landslides. For pet moves, this three-tier geography — lake, midland, high ranges — means that a pickup in Kottayam town, a pickup in Kumarakom, and a pickup in the eastern hill belt are three different operations.
