Two things that shape every Kollam pet move

One: Kollam was the cashew capital of the world, and the cashew-factory belt still shapes the city's eastern side. Commercial cashew processing in Kollam began in the early decades of the 20th century, when traders in the Travancore region recognised that the cashew nut — which had been brought to the Malabar coast from the Americas by the Portuguese — could be processed and exported at scale. The industry grew rapidly through the 1920s and 1930s, and by the middle of the century Kollam had become the largest cashew processing and export centre in the world. At its peak, the city's cashew factories employed more than a lakh workers, the vast majority of them women, and the industry became the defining economic and social force of the town. Raw cashew was imported from Africa and Southeast Asia, processed in the factories of Kollam and the surrounding belt, and the kernels were then exported back out to markets in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. Although competition from Vietnam and Africa and the mechanisation of processing have shrunk the industry since the 1990s, Kollam remains one of India's major cashew-processing centres, and the factory belt — particularly around Kilikolloor, Chandanathope, Sakthikulangara, and the eastern stretches of the city — is still active. The practical effect for pet moves is that the roads through the cashew belt carry continuous worker and goods movement on weekdays, and the factory lanes themselves are narrow and often crowded. Two: Kollam sits on Ashtamudi Lake, and the city's geography is genuinely shaped by the backwater around it. Ashtamudi — the name means "eight-armed" in Malayalam, referring to the eight channels or arms of the lake — is the second-largest backwater in Kerala after Vembanad, and it was designated a Ramsar wetland site in 2002 in recognition of its ecological importance. The lake opens into the Arabian Sea at Neendakara, where one of Kerala's largest fishing harbours is located, and it extends inland through a network of channels toward Kollam town and beyond. The Kollam–Alappuzha backwater route is one of Kerala's major inland waterways, and it is one of the primary tourist routes of the state. Kollam also sits on the historic Quilon port of the spice trade — the city was a major emporium for pepper and other spices long before the Portuguese arrived, and it traded with Rome, Arabia, and China through the medieval period. The Thangassery lighthouse, one of the oldest in Kerala, still stands on the coast, and the old Portuguese and Dutch settlements around Thangassery reflect that history.
