What makes a Kohima pet move genuinely different

One: the descent to Dimapur is the whole story. Kohima sits at 1,500 metres; Dimapur, 74 km to the west, sits at 40 metres. Between them, NH-2 drops roughly 1,460 metres through the Naga Hills. Dimapur is where the nearest railway station is, and Dimapur is also where the nearest airport is. So every pet that leaves Kohima for anywhere in mainland India — Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Guwahati — first has to descend that entire drop to Dimapur, and then either board a train or board a flight. Kohima itself has neither a railway station nor a commercial airport. The city is one of only three Indian state capitals with that limitation, and the closest equivalent we serve is Aizawl. But where Aizawl's exits are one airport and one slide-prone highway, Kohima has a single shared exit — the 74 km NH-2 descent — that leads to both.

Two: the other direction is NH-29 to Imphal. The second route out of Kohima runs east toward Manipur. NH-29 climbs over the Manipur Hills through Mao and Senapati before descending into the Imphal valley — roughly 130 km, and a 4 to 5 hour drive in good conditions. This is a genuinely useful route for pet parents moving between the two states, and we run it regularly. But it is a mountain highway with sustained gradient work in both directions, and it can be slow in heavy rain or when the road is under repair. We drive it in daylight only, with extra breaks, and we monitor Manipur and Nagaland road advisories the same way we monitor NH-2.

Three: Hornbill Festival rewrites the city for ten days every December. The Hornbill Festival — Nagaland's flagship cultural event — runs from 1 to 10 December every year at Kisama Heritage Village, about 12 km from Kohima on the Imphal road. During those ten days, hotels in Kohima book out months in advance, the road to Kisama carries heavy traffic throughout the day, and evening traffic in the city centre around Razhu Point and Dak Lane slows considerably. If your travel dates fall inside the Hornbill window, we strongly recommend booking pickup at least three weeks ahead, and choosing an early-morning slot. Outside Hornbill, the city is quieter and pickup timing is far more flexible. This is the single biggest seasonal factor that changes how a Kohima pet move is planned, and it has no equivalent in most other Indian cities we serve.

And one thing that always applies: the monsoon. From June to September, Nagaland receives heavy rain, and NH-2 through the Naga Hills is prone to landslides. The descent from Kohima to Dimapur can be blocked for hours when debris slides onto the road, and occasionally for a full day. We check Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority and NH-2 traffic advisories every morning through the monsoon. On days when a slide warning is active, road departures are held and rescheduled at no cost. Dimapur Airport and Dimapur Railway Station remain accessible by alternate local routes in most cases, but the main highway is the standard route and we plan around its condition. Waterproof crate liners and covered loading apply throughout these months.
