Two things that shape every Katihar pet move

One: Katihar sits at the meeting point of the Kosi, the Mahananda and the Ganga, and in this district the rivers have moved — literally — within living memory. Katihar occupies the Kosi–Mahananda interfluve in Bihar's north-eastern corner, where the ground is low, flat and entirely alluvial, formed by rivers that regularly change their beds. The district's geography is dominated by water in a way that is hard to overstate. The Kosi — one of the largest tributaries of the Ganga, carrying an enormous sediment load, and the river that gave the phrase "Sorrow of Bihar" to the Indian vocabulary — runs along Katihar's western boundary, and its flood history is genuinely catastrophic: major floods in 1954, 1955, 1968, 1971, 1976, 1984, 1987 and 2008. In August 2008 the Kosi breached its embankment at Kusaha in Nepal and shifted course by roughly 120 km to the east, abandoning its old channel and flooding vast areas of Bihar, displacing around three million people and affecting five districts including Katihar. That is not ancient history — the river's new channel and the changed drainage still shape the district today. Alongside the Kosi runs the Mahananda, which cuts through the district on its way south to join the Ganga, and along the southern boundary runs the Ganga itself. Smaller rivers and streams — the Kamla, Kareh, Balan, Donwar, Mehi and Bagmati — all drain this low ground, and the result is that a large share of Katihar district is floodplain. What that means practically is that the district breaks into belts, and each one floods, drains and behaves differently. First, the old town and junction belt — Mirchaibari, Sipahi Tola, Nayagaon, Chhapra, Saidpur, Jagdishpur, Kachahari Road, Station Road and the lanes around Katihar Junction — which is a dense, busy railway town with tight commercial lanes and, in the older quarters, streets too narrow for a large vehicle. Pickups there need a small vehicle, an early slot, and a pre-agreed handover point on a wider road. Second, the market and mill belts — Balua Bazar, Roshanbagh, Premnagar, Bhawanipur, Hasanganj, Kalibari, Bhogaon and Durgaganj, and the older jute mill quarters that grew up around the industry — which are working areas with loading activity through the day and narrow approach lanes. Third, the embankment and river-side belts along the Kosi, the Mahananda and the Ganga, which in a flood year become the only dry routes in the district and carry traffic they were never designed for. Fourth, the Manihari and Kursela belt along the Ganga, where the ground is low and the river bank shifts, and where the ghat traffic to Sahibganj crosses. And fifth, the rural blocks — Barsoi, Kadwa, Falka, Korha, Sameli, Azamnagar, Balrampur, Pranpur, Dandkhora, Amdabad, Mansahi, Barari, Belwa, Hasanganj and Murliganj Road — where distances are longer, roads can narrow or turn unpaved at the last stretch, and in the monsoon the village tracks soften badly. Two: Katihar is a railway junction city on the Nepal and Bengal border, a jute and maize town, and it has been through the worst river disaster in Bihar's modern history — and all three of those shape a pet move. Start with what this district actually is. Katihar Junction is the divisional headquarters of the North East Frontier Railway, one of the busiest junctions in eastern India, and the point where the NFR meets the Eastern Railway — the gateway through which trains pass toward New Jalpaiguri, Guwahati, Malda, Barauni, Patna, Bhagalpur and the Nepal border at Jogbani. That single fact explains why Katihar exists as a city at all: the railways built the town around the junction, and a large share of the population is directly or indirectly railway. It also means an unusually large share of pet moves here are railway postings, transfers and retirements on fixed dates, along with postings in the district administration, the jute and agricultural trade, and the border and customs establishments — so we build the pet's travel schedule backwards from your joining or reporting date rather than the other way around. Then there is the trade identity. Katihar is a jute and maize centre, with one of the largest maize markets in Bihar and a significant jute mill heritage — the district's jute mills and jute trading were once a major employer, and the mill quarters still stand. Rice, wheat, jute and maize move out of this district by road and rail, and the loading belts are busy through the season. And then there is the geography, which is the part that matters most. This district sits on two international and state boundaries: West Bengal is a short drive east — Dalkhola is about 30 km, Raiganj about 50 km, Malda about 120 km, Siliguri about 140 km — and Nepal lies to the north via the Jogbani and Galgalia routes. For a pet move, that proximity means a fair number of what look like major interstate journeys are actually short hops, and we price and plan them accordingly while still handling the interstate paperwork properly. But it also means we plan around border and transiting traffic, especially on the Jogbani and Bengal routes. And then the flood legacy, which is the single most important planning factor in Katihar. The 2008 Kosi breach did not just flood the district for one season — it permanently changed the river's course and the district's drainage, and the Kosi has continued to erode, deposit and shift within its new channel since. As recently as 2024 and 2025, Kosi and Mahananda flood waters have again inundated low belts in Katihar district, cut off villages, breached embankments and disrupted road links. There is one more local factor worth knowing, and it relates to wildlife. Katihar adjoins the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary belt and the forested riverine tracts along the Mahananda and the Ganga, where elephants, leopards and other wildlife move through the corridors, especially around the Barsoi, Kadwa and Amdabad fringes — so night movement in the outer blocks needs care, and we plan accordingly. On the transport side, Katihar Junction gives the district outstanding rail connectivity, with Barsoi and Manihari adding options; NH-31 and NH-131A link the district toward Bhagalpur, Purnea, Araria and the Bengal border; and Bagdogra Airport near Siliguri is the practical airport, about 140 km away. Because the district is compact and closely ringed by Purnea, Bhagalpur, Dalkhola and Malda, a fair number of what look like long moves are actually short, and we price and plan them accordingly.
