Two things that shape every Kannur pet move

One: Kannur's industrial workforce works from home, not from factories, and that changes how the city's lanes are used. This is the single most distinctive thing about Kannur's economy. Unlike Kollam, where cashew processing was concentrated in large factory sheds, or Thrissur, where gold jewellery is made in workshops, Kannur's two biggest traditional industries — handloom weaving and beedi rolling — are overwhelmingly home-based. The handloom industry in Kannur is the largest in Kerala, and the district is known across India for the Kannur handloom products — the set mundu, the thorthu, and the furnishing fabrics that come out of the cooperative societies and the thousands of individual looms. The beedi-rolling industry in the district, meanwhile, is one of Kerala's largest, and almost all of the work is done in homes by women who collect the tobacco and tendu leaf from distribution points, roll the beedis at home, and return the finished bundles for weighing. The result is a city where a large share of the working population is inside their houses during the working day, and where the small lanes between houses carry a constant pedestrian and two-wheeler flow — women carrying leaf bundles, finished beedi trays, and handloom yarn. For pet moves, this shapes the pickups in a very practical way. The residential lanes in the weaving and beedi belts — around Chirakkal, Valapattanam, Pappinisseri, and parts of Thana and Talap — are narrow and often busy with this pedestrian traffic, and a large vehicle cannot safely pass through them. We use smaller vehicles for those pickups, or we arrange a nearby-road crate handover and walk the pet the short distance. The main roads and the newer residential belts along NH-66 are far more straightforward.

Two: the Theyyam season runs from roughly October to May, and it takes over the shrines and family compounds across the district. Theyyam is the ritual dance form of North Malabar, and Kannur is its heartland. Performances are held at kavus — sacred groves — and at tharavadu family compounds and roadside shrines across the district, running from the Malayalam month of Thulam through to Edavam, which usually maps to roughly October through May. What makes Theyyam unusual is that the performer is not acting as a dancer portraying a deity — he is believed to become the deity, and during the performance the lower-caste communities that traditionally perform Theyyam are considered to hold the divine presence. The performances happen in open courtyards rather than auditoriums, and the shrines where they take place are often located in the middle of residential neighbourhoods, at the end of narrow lanes, or inside family compounds. During the season, these shrines draw crowds through the night — Theyyam performances often run from dusk until dawn — and the roads leading to the larger kavus are busy throughout the season. For pet moves, this matters in two ways. First, the shrine-adjacent lanes are the same narrow lanes we already plan for, and they get busier during the season, so pickups near an active kavu are best scheduled for the morning after rather than the night of a performance. Second, the larger annual Theyyam festivals at well-known kavus across the district — including those in and around Kannur town — draw significant crowds and change the local traffic pattern for the days around them. We confirm whether your pickup coincides with a festival date and plan accordingly. Separately, Kannur's other major landmark is the Kannur International Airport at Mattannur, which opened in December 2018 and gave North Malabar its own international gateway — before that, every long-distance air move from Kannur meant a drive of several hours to Kozhikode or Mangaluru. On the heritage side, the St. Angelo Fort on the Ayikkara coast was built by the Portuguese in 1505 and is one of the oldest Portuguese forts in India, later held by the Dutch and then the Arakkal kingdom, the only Muslim royal family in Kerala. The fort and the Arakkal Palace sit in the older coastal belt, and the lanes around them are historic and narrow.
