One: Kanker is a historic princely town wrapped around a royal palace, and its layout still follows that old core — with narrow lanes in the centre and wider roads only along the newer highway and railway belts. Those lanes are narrow, often crowded, and a large vehicle simply cannot reach many doorsteps. Outside that core, the town has expanded along NH-30 and the Raipur–Jagdalpur railway line, where the station, the bus stand, and the newer colonies sit on wider, more accessible roads. The surrounding district is a different world again: Charama, Bhanupratappur, Narharpur, Durgukondal, Koilebeda, Antagarh and Pakhanjur are spread across forested blocks linked by state highways and rural roads that narrow sharply once you leave the main routes. A pickup in the old town near the palace and a pickup in Antagarh or Pakhanjur are two completely different operations. The Kanker Dussehra, celebrated with traditional royal rituals, and the local tribal fairs like Fagun Madai draw crowds and fill the roads at certain times of year. On top of that, the monsoon from June to September is genuinely heavy here, and the Mahanadi and its tributaries run high. The Keshkal valley — one of the most scenic stretches of NH-30, with its dense forests and winding ghats — can see landslides, fallen trees, and slippery roads during the rains, and low-lying stretches elsewhere in the district go under water.
