Why Imphal is the most enclosed state capital on our map

One: Imphal has no railway station, and no realistic rail access. The nearest rail head is Dimapur in Nagaland, about 215 km away on NH-2, and the Jiribam rail head in Manipur itself is roughly 220 km from Imphal on NH-37. Neither is a practical daily connection for a pet move — both require long hill drives on the same roads that connect Imphal to the rest of India. For practical purposes, every long-distance pet move from Imphal goes either by road on NH-2 or NH-37, or by air from Bir Tikendrajit International Airport. The airport is the second-largest in the Northeast after Guwahati, and it handles flights to Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, and Bangalore. For routes beyond the Northeast, air is nearly always the better choice.

Two: Imphal valley is flat — but everything outside it is not. The city sits in an oval-shaped valley about 700 km² in area, surrounded on all sides by the hills of the Manipur range. Within the valley — Thangmeiband, Uripok, Sagolband, Singjamei, Wangkhei, Porompat — the roads are level and pickups are straightforward. But every route out of the valley has to climb through hill passes. NH-2 toward Dimapur crosses the Mao–Maram section, and NH-37 toward Jiribam and Silchar crosses through the Barak valley hills. Both are winding, steep, and can be slow in heavy rain — and both pass through terrain that has occasionally been affected by local disruptions in recent years. We plan departures in daylight hours only, with extra breaks for hill sections, and we check ground conditions before confirming any road-based long-haul move.

Three: air is the reliable route for long distances. For pet parents moving to or from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, or Kolkata, flying the pet is faster, safer, and more predictable than a multi-day road trip along the hill highways. Total road distance from Imphal to Guwahati is roughly 490 km, but the trip takes 10–14 hours — or two days with an overnight halt for the pet's comfort. Imphal to Kolkata by road is over 1,400 km and would take four days or more. By air, the same Kolkata route takes under two hours. And one more: weather and monsoon. Imphal gets a heavy monsoon from May to September, and the hill passes on NH-2 and NH-37 are prone to landslides during this window. On days when a landslide warning or road closure is active, road departures are held and rescheduled at no cost.
