Two things that shape every Howrah pet move

One: Howrah is a long, thin, tidal riverbank city with only two road bridges out of it, and in this city the crossing — not the distance — is the whole problem. Howrah runs roughly 20 km north to south along the west bank of the Hooghly, from Bally and Belur in the north down through Salkia, Golabari, Shibpur, Bantra and Santragachi to Dhulagarh, and then continues out into the rural south at Domjur, Bagnan, Uluberia, Amta and Sankrail. Almost all of it is squeezed between the river and the railway, and the river here is tidal — the Hooghly rises and falls twice a day, which matters for the ghats and the low riverside ground. Now the crucial fact: to get from Howrah to Kolkata by road you have essentially two options — the Howrah Bridge (Rabindra Setu) and Vidyasagar Setu (the Second Hooghly Bridge). The Howrah Bridge is a 1943 cantilever with no supporting pillars, one of the busiest bridges in the world, carrying an enormous volume of vehicles and pedestrians including the flower market traffic at Mullick Ghat; the Vidyasagar Setu is the cable-stayed crossing that feeds the Kona Expressway and the southern routes. Both are bottlenecks. So the route out of Howrah is chosen by direction, and we choose it deliberately: south and west — toward Kharagpur, Haldia, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, and Kolkata's southern fringe — goes over Vidyasagar Setu and the Kona Expressway, which is the practical and much kinder route for a pet in a crate; north and east — toward Kolkata proper, the airport at Dumdum, and the NH-12 and NH-19 corridors — goes over the Howrah Bridge and the GT Road, timed very deliberately. On top of that, Howrah's own street system is genuinely difficult. The old town belts — Salkia, Golabari, Pilkhana, Tikiapara, Buxarah, Mali Panchghara, Kadamtala and Bantra — are dense bustee and bazaar areas with narrow lanes, shared entrances, and no room for a large vehicle anywhere near most doors, and pickups there need a small vehicle, an early slot, and a handover point a few hundred metres away. The mill and industrial belts along the Grand Trunk Road and the Foreshore Road — Howrah's jute mills, engineering works and warehouses, the trade that built this city — carry heavy truck movement and loading through the working day. The planned and newer residential belts — Shibpur around IIEST and the Botanical Garden, parts of Bally and Belur, Liluah's railway colony, Santragachi, Jagacha and Dasnagar — are far easier, with proper roads and compounds. And the rural south — Domjur, Bagnan, Uluberia, Amta, Jagatballavpur, Panchla, Sankrail — is a different exercise again: longer distances, roads that can be narrow or unpaved at the last stretch, and low ground that waterlogs. We confirm which of these you are at booking, and we will tell you plainly if your lane needs more than two handlers or a crate handover on a wider road.

Two: Howrah is India's oldest railway city and one of its oldest industrial cities, and both the calendar and the weather here can close roads outright. Start with what this city actually is. Howrah Station opened in 1854 and is the oldest and one of the largest railway termini in India, the headquarters of the South Eastern Railway, and the point from which the first trains ran in eastern India; it handles an extraordinary volume of long-distance passengers every day, and the approach roads to it — along the GT Road, around the station forecourt, and down to the bridge — are permanently congested. Santragachi and Shalimar add two more major stations on this side of the river. The city grew around that railway and around the jute mills, and its industrial heritage is visible everywhere — the mill buildings, the warehouses, the ghats along the river, the workshops. It is also, distinctly, the city of Belur Math, the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission founded by Swami Vivekananda, which draws pilgrims and visitors year-round and has its own calendar of observances, and of the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden at Shibpur, home to the Great Banyan — one of the oldest and largest banyan trees in the world — which is a genuine visitor draw in its own right. Then the calendar, which in Howrah is dominated by Durga Puja. Bengal's Puja is not a few days of festivity; it is roughly a week in which the city effectively hands its roads over to crowds, with pandals in every para, processions, and entire streets closed to vehicles — and Howrah's own barowari pandals and the neighbourhood pujas draw enormous footfall, with the lanes of Salkia, Shibpur, Bantra and the mill belts becoming impassable at peak hours. Kali Puja follows close behind, and Kali Puja at the Kalighat and Dakshineswar temples draws pilgrims who pass through Howrah to reach them. Jagaddhatri Puja, Poila Boishakh, Rath Yatra and Saraswati Puja each bring their own crowds. During these windows we schedule pickups for early morning, before the roads fill, we route around the pandal closures, and on the biggest days we will tell you plainly that a pickup inside the old town is not realistic and that the practical plan is to move your pet from a reachable point on a main road instead. Now the weather, which here is a safety matter. Howrah is in the Bengal delta, and its year is built around water. Summer from April to June is 36–40°C with humidity that makes the heat index far higher than the thermometer suggests — and humid heat is harder on an animal than dry heat, so pickups run early with a pre-cooled cabin. The monsoon from roughly June to September brings heavy and prolonged rain, and low belts in Howrah genuinely waterlog — the older drainage, the mill areas, the bustee lanes and the riverside ground are all vulnerable. And this coast lies squarely in the cyclone path: Cyclone Amphan in May 2020 and Cyclone Yaas in May 2021 both struck this region, and in a cyclone warning the bridges, the flyovers and the exposed stretches can be shut down entirely. So we track the weather and the district advisories, keep a high-ground route ready, and reschedule at no cost on red-alert or cyclone days. And because Howrah sits right on the edge of Kolkata, a large share of what look like major moves are actually short — Kolkata, Salt Lake, Rajarhat, Dumdum and Behala are close — and we price and plan them accordingly. One local advantage: Bengal has a deeply animal-oriented culture, with strong local vets, well-established rescue networks including the long-running street-dog welfare organisations, and an excellent veterinary ecosystem across Howrah and Kolkata — so vaccination records are usually in good order, and we verify every document before departure.
