Why Gangtok is the hardest Sikkim pet move to plan

One: Pakyong is one of India's most weather-sensitive airports. Pakyong Airport opened in 2018 after more than a decade of construction, and it sits at roughly 1,400 metres in the Sikkim hills — one of the highest commercial airports in the country. Only small ATR-type aircraft can operate there, and the airport's location means it is frequently affected by low cloud, fog, and wind in the surrounding valleys. Flight cancellations and diversions to Bagdogra are more common at Pakyong than at any other airport we plan around. For pet parents, this means air shipping directly from Sikkim is possible but never guaranteed on a specific date. When we book a Pakyong departure, we always hold a road-and-Bagdogra contingency in parallel.

Two: NH-10 through the Teesta valley is the only road out. Every long-haul pet move from Gangtok runs on NH-10 — the old Siliguri–Gangtok highway, now also signed as NH-717A — which follows the Teesta river valley for much of its route. It is a winding mountain road with sustained gradients, and it is one of the most landslide-prone highways in India. In October 2023, the South Lhonak Lake glacial outburst in North Sikkim sent a massive surge down the Teesta, damaging sections of NH-10 and cutting off parts of the state for days. Sections have been rebuilt, but the road remains vulnerable to slides and washouts during the monsoon from May to September. We check Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority and NH-10 traffic advisories every morning before confirming any departure.

Three: Bagdogra and New Jalpaiguri remain the practical gateways for most pets. For Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, or any destination beyond Sikkim's immediate neighbours, the most reliable route is: door pickup in Gangtok, five-hour descent on NH-10 to Siliguri, then either Bagdogra Airport (124 km from Gangtok) or New Jalpaiguri railway station (125 km). Bagdogra handles regular flights to Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, and Bangalore, and NJP is a major rail head with connections across India. The trade-off is the descent itself — five hours on a winding road, with the pet in the crate the whole time. We build extra breaks into the descent, and we do not recommend it in the evening, because arriving in the plains at night after a five-hour hill drive is harder on the pet than arriving in daylight.

And one thing that applies all year: the monsoon. Sikkim receives some of the heaviest monsoon rainfall in the Eastern Himalayas — from May to September, road conditions on NH-10 change daily. Landslides, washouts, and falling rock are common on the Teesta valley stretch, and the road can be closed for hours or occasionally a full day. We monitor Sikkim and West Bengal State Disaster Management Authority advisories every morning. On days when a slide warning is active, road departures are held and rescheduled at no cost. Waterproof crate liners and covered loading apply throughout these months.
