Two things that shape every Dharwad pet move

One: Dharwad is Vidyanagari — the city of learning — and its campus belt makes it genuinely different from Hubballi. The two cities share a border and are often named together as Hubballi–Dharwad, but they were never the same. Hubballi grew as a commercial and railway town; Dharwad grew as the cultural and educational capital of the region. Karnatak University was established in Dharwad in 1949, one of the oldest universities in Karnataka, and it remains the city's largest institution. The University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, was set up in 1986 and is the primary agricultural research university for North Karnataka. And IIT Dharwad — one of the newer Indian Institutes of Technology — began operations in 2016 and is building out a permanent campus in the city. The result is that Dharwad has a large, permanent student and faculty population that shapes its daily rhythm, and the roads around the campuses and the Vidyagiri belt carry steady two-wheeler and pedestrian traffic through the semester. The old town core sits on a hillock at the higher end of the city, with narrow, winding lanes that were laid out long before the universities arrived. Pickups from the hillock lanes use smaller vehicles or a nearby-road crate handover, while pickups from the campus-adjacent sectors and the newer residential belts are straightforward.

Two: Dharwad is the seat of Hindustani classical music in Karnataka, and it is the home of one of India's few GI-tagged sweets. The city's music heritage is genuinely national in scope. Dharwad was the home of Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur, Pandit Basavaraj Rajguru, and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, who grew up here, and the Dharwad gharana of Hindustani classical music became one of the most influential schools in the genre. Kumar Gandharva settled in Dharwad in the 1960s and composed much of his later work here, and Sawai Gandharva — whose annual music festival in Pune is one of India's largest — was from Kundgol near Dharwad. The Kannada poet D.R. Bendre, who won the Jnanpith Award in 1973, also lived in the city, and his home is a landmark. Alongside this, Dharwad is known for the Dharwad Peda — a brown milk-based sweet that originated with the Thakur family in the 19th century, and which received a Geographical Indication tag recognising it as a product unique to the city. Both of these identities shape how Dharwad is laid out and how it moves. The music and literary institutions, the annual music festival, and the peda shops in the old town belt all draw visitors, and the roads around the old market and the cultural venues carry heavier traffic during festival and event weeks.
