Two things that shape every Dharamshala pet move

One: Dharamshala is split between the Kangra Valley floor and the Dhauladhar ridge, and the two halves need different pickup planning. The town is divided into Lower Dharamshala — Kotwali Bazaar and the areas further down into the Kangra Valley, at an average height of 1,250 metres — and Upper Dharamshala, which is McLeod Ganj at nearly 1,800 metres and the surrounding hillside settlements of Dharamkot, Bhagsu, Forsyth Ganj, and Naddi[reference:0]. Upper Dharamshala is often called Little Lhasa because it has been the home of the 14th Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile since 1959, when the Dalai Lama fled Tibet with around 30,000 Tibetans after the Lhasa Uprising[reference:1]. The old town above the Kangra Valley is now the largest Tibetan settlement outside Tibet, with the Namgyal Monastery, the Tsuglagkhang complex, and dozens of cafés, monasteries, and handicraft shops along the Temple Road and McLeod Ganj main square[reference:2]. For pet moves, this split matters in a practical way: in the lower town, Kotwali Bazaar and the Kangra Valley floor have wider roads and pickups are straightforward. On the ridge, the lanes are steep, narrow, and often single-lane, and the road approaches to Dharamkot and Bhagsu are the steepest in the town. We plan every pickup based on which side of this split your address sits on, and the ridge-side pickups use smaller vehicles or a nearby-road crate handover.

Two: the two roads from Dharamshala to McLeod Ganj are among the most landslide-prone in Himachal, and the monsoon here is genuinely heavy. The 10-km stretch connecting Dharamshala to McLeod Ganj is the lifeline of the town, and it has been repeatedly damaged by landslips and slope failures. At least 25 active landslide zones have been identified in Dharamshala alone, and both roads up to McLeod Ganj — the main Dharamshala–McLeod Ganj road and the alternative Khara Danda road — have been closed for extended periods during the monsoon in recent years[reference:3][reference:4]. The town receives some of the heaviest monsoon rainfall in Himachal — the wider Kangra region gets 2,500–3,000 mm during the season, with July and August monthly totals regularly exceeding 500 mm[reference:5][reference:6]. The National Highway-503 through Forsyth Ganj has also begun sinking and sliding at several points, and the final 9 km up to McLeod Ganj requires careful first-gear driving even in good conditions[reference:7][reference:8].
