The first day through the plains is warm and dry, so hydration and cooling stay active right through Punjab. The second day climbs into the mountains, so we progressively shift to warmth management from Pathankot onward. Double-coated breeds — huskies, malamutes, German shepherds, Tibetan mastiffs — often come into their own once the vehicle crosses Banihal, while short-coated and senior dogs need insulated bedding and heating support on that final day. Flat-faced breeds like pugs, boxers and bulldogs need the most attention through the warm plains and again in the cold of the valley.

Our cat relocation service on this route is built for calm rather than activity. Cats travel in covered carriers lined with their own familiar bedding, are never placed near unknown animals, and get litter access at rest stops chosen well away from engine noise and passing traffic. With an overnight halt along the route, the stop is arranged so your cat has a quiet, enclosed space to settle before the second day's drive. Because that final day passes through a mountain tunnel and into a cold valley, we keep the cabin warm and stable from Udhampur onward, with extra bedding and reduced handling as the road climbs.

Handlers Who Read Animals Well

Two days on the road with a sharp transition from plains warmth to alpine cold can quietly affect an animal's comfort, so our handlers watch closely for the subtle signs throughout. A dog panting more than the conditions justify on the Punjab stretch, a cat that has stopped grooming, a refusal to drink at the second or third stop, or a shiver on the Banihal approach that says the warm bedding needs to come out immediately. Trained in animal behaviour and basic first aid, they catch small problems before they become serious ones.

You will see every stage as it happens — climbing over the Mohand pass out of the Doon valley, skirting Delhi on the Western Peripheral Expressway, passing Ambala, Ludhiana and Jalandhar, crossing into Jammu & Kashmir at Lakhanpur, moving through Jammu and Udhampur, following the Chenab gorge through Ramban, entering the Jawahar tunnel at Banihal, and emerging into the Kashmir valley for the final run past Pampore's saffron fields to Srinagar.
