Two things that shape every Darjeeling pet move

One: Darjeeling is built on a ridge, and much of the town cannot be reached by car at all. The town grew along the crest of a single ridge — the Mall and Chowrasta at its centre, Gandhi Road and Laden La Road running off it, and the neighbourhoods of Jalapahar, Richmond Hill, North Point, Singamari and Lebong dropping away down the slopes on either side. The roads that serve these areas are narrow, steep and often single-lane, and the Mall and Chowrasta themselves are pedestrian-only. Many homes — including a large share of the older houses and the tea-garden quarters — are reached by footpath, staircase or a lane too narrow for anything bigger than a small car. That single fact decides how a pet can be picked up here. For homes on the main road, a doorstep pickup is straightforward. For homes on the slopes or behind the pedestrian zones, we arrange a crate handover at the nearest vehicle-accessible point — which may be a few hundred metres and a flight of steps away — and our handlers carry the crate from there. We never assume a car can reach every address, and we confirm the exact access point at booking. Across the town, pickups are also timed around the tourist rush: from March to June and again from October to early December, the Mall, Chowrasta, Gandhi Road and the toy-train stations are extremely busy, and the roads are packed with visitors and vehicles through the middle of the day. We schedule most town pickups for early morning, before the crowds build and while the roads are still clear.

Two: Darjeeling is a tea town and a colonial hill station, and its roads, its railway and its weather all run on that history. The town exists because the British developed it as a sanatorium and hill station in the mid-19th century, and then because the tea industry took root on the surrounding slopes — the Darjeeling tea gardens, with their distinctive muscatel flavour and their protected geographical indication, are still the economic and cultural heart of the ridge, and the estates at Happy Valley, Glenburn, Margaret's Hope, Rungneet and Tukvar sit right within and around the town. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the UNESCO World Heritage toy train, still runs on its narrow-gauge line between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling, climbing through Kurseong, Sonada and Ghoom — Ghoom being the highest railway station in India — with its famous loops and z-reverses, and the Batasia Loop and the war memorial are landmarks on the route. The town is also the base for the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, founded after Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary's Everest climb, with the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park — known for its red pandas and snow leopards — right beside it, and the Peace Pagoda and the Bhutia Busty Monastery are among its best-known landmarks. The population is unusually diverse — Gorkha, Lepcha, Bhutia, Tibetan, Bengali and Anglo-Indian communities all have deep roots here — and the town's calendar includes Dashain, Tihar, Losar, Baisakhi and the Darjeeling Carnival. For pet moves, the practical effect is simple: we plan pickups around the tourist seasons, around the festival days when the Mall and the monastery and temple areas fill up, and around the toy train's schedule where it crosses the roads. The weather does the rest — the monsoon, from late June to September, brings some of the heaviest rain in the eastern Himalaya, and landslides on Hill Cart Road, NH-110 and the Kurseong and Siliguri routes are common, sometimes closing the road for days. Through the rains we use waterproof crate liners and covered loading as standard, we check the road condition before every descent, and we reschedule at no cost on red-alert days or when a road is officially unsafe. In winter, frost, fog and occasional snow on the higher stretches mean we keep the cabin warm, plan around early darkness, and confirm the road condition before every pickup.
