The Bokaro Steel Plant was set up under SAIL with Soviet technical collaboration, and it was one of the largest integrated steel plants built in India in the 1960s and 70s. What distinguishes it from Bhilai and Rourkela — the other two Soviet-era steel plants — is that the design and much of the construction were handled indigenously, which is why Bokaro is often called India's first Swadeshi steel plant. The plant's first blast furnace was commissioned in 1972, and the hot strip mill followed in 1978. Bokaro Steel Plant remains one of SAIL's largest by capacity. The city itself was planned as a company township around the plant, laid out in numbered sectors from Sector 1 to Sector 12, with the plant, the steel plant colony, the Bokaro Steel City railway station, and the City Centre serving as the fixed anchor points. The Bokaro Steel City railway station itself is a major junction on the South Eastern Railway, on the Gomoh–Muri section of the Grand Chord route, with direct trains toward Howrah, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Ranchi, and Patna — and the station also handles traffic for the Adra division and the Bokaro–Chandrapura line.
