The railway itself is a defining feature. Bilaspur Junction is a divisional headquarters of the South East Central Railway and one of the busiest junctions in India, with lines radiating toward Mumbai, Howrah, Delhi, Nagpur, Raipur and Katni, and the station area and its approach roads carry heavy traffic and constant movement of passengers and goods. A pickup in the old lanes near Gol Bazaar and a pickup in a flat in Tifra or Sirgitti are completely different operations. Two: Bilaspur is the rice bowl of Chhattisgarh and a city of festivals and institutions, and both the agricultural calendar and the monsoon decide when a pet can travel. Bilaspur is often called the rice bowl of Chhattisgarh, and the district is one of the state's largest producers of paddy. The rice mills, the mandis, and the cold-storage belts are central to the local economy, and during the harvest and procurement season — roughly October to December — the roads fill with tractors, trolleys and grain trucks, and the mill belts run at full capacity. The city is also famous for its Kosa silk (tussar silk) industry, which has been a traditional craft here for generations. Summers are scorching — April and May regularly cross 44°C — and the monsoon, from June to September, brings over 1,200 mm of rain, with the Arpa and Shivnath rivers swelling and low-lying stretches across the city going under water in a bad year. The nearby Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary and the hill belts toward Amarkantak add their own seasonal traffic.
