Alongside the foundries, Belagavi district is one of Karnataka's largest sugar producers — it is often called the "Sugar Bowl of Karnataka" — with cooperative sugar factories across the district, and the Belagavi Kunda, a milk-based sweet sold in the old market belt, has its own identity in the region. For a week or two each year — usually in December — the Chief Minister, cabinet, MLAs, and the state secretariat move to Belagavi, and the roads around the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha complex carry noticeably heavier traffic during that window. The building was constructed as part of a political compromise tied to the long-running Karnataka–Maharashtra border dispute over Belagavi, which has remained unresolved since the States Reorganisation Act of 1956. The city has both Kannada and Marathi-speaking populations, and it was renamed from Belgaum to Belagavi in 2014 as part of a broader renaming of Karnataka's cities. The old Belgaum Fort, built in the 12th century by the Ratta dynasty and later expanded by the Adil Shahi and Maratha rulers, sits at the centre of the old town, and its walls, temples, and mosques are among the city's oldest structures. The Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre is also based in the Belagavi cantonment, one of the oldest in India, which gives the city a substantial military presence alongside its civilian character.
