Why Agartala is the hardest Indian city to move a pet into or out of

One: Bangladesh wraps around Agartala on three sides. Tripura is bordered by Bangladesh on the west, north, and east, and the Akhaura border crossing — one of the busiest land ports between the two countries — is roughly 3 km from the city centre. The only Indian territory that connects Agartala to the rest of the country is a narrow strip of southern Assam. This is the single most defining fact about moving anything, including a pet, to or from Agartala: there is no shortcut, no alternate route, and no way to shorten the distance. Every road route out of Tripura runs through Assam.

Two: NH-8 is the only road to the rest of India. Every road-based long-haul pet move from Agartala runs on NH-8 — through Udaipur, Ambassa, and Kumarghat in Tripura, then into Assam via Karimganj and onward to Silchar (about 180 km from Agartala) and Guwahati (about 600 km). From Guwahati, the route continues down the Siliguri Corridor and toward the rest of India. Realistically, Agartala to Guwahati is a two-day drive for us with an overnight halt — not a single overnight run. Agartala to Kolkata is a four-day drive, and Agartala to Delhi NCR is over five days. These are genuinely long hauls, and we plan them as multi-day journeys with halts at pet-safe facilities, not as continuous drives.

Three: air shipping is the practical choice for long distances. For pet parents moving to or from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, or Chennai, flying the pet is faster, safer, and often comparable in cost to a five-day road trip. Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport at Agartala handles regular flights to Kolkata, Guwahati, Delhi, and Bengaluru, and we handle the full pipeline: door pickup in Agartala, IATA-compliant crate fitting, cargo terminal handover at MBB, and coordination with the receiving terminal at the destination. The pet flies in a pressurised, climate-controlled cargo hold, and total travel time is a few hours instead of days. We recommend air for any route beyond Guwahati.

And one thing to know: the monsoon. Tripura gets one of the heaviest monsoons in the Northeast — from May to September, rain is sustained and can be intense. This affects road travel on NH-8 primarily, where landslide-prone stretches between Ambassa and Kumarghat and the Assam border sections can slow or block movement. We monitor Tripura State Disaster Management Authority and Assam State Disaster Management Authority advisories daily through the monsoon. Waterproof crate liners and covered loading apply throughout these months. On red-alert days, pickups are rescheduled at no cost. Road departures north are delayed until the day's rain eases, and air shipping is unaffected by ground weather at the destination end once the aircraft is airborne.
